Our Aviation Environmental & Sustainability Group supports over 200 airports worldwide with noise and air quality studies, sustainability plans, mitigation strategies, environmental documentation, and regulatory compliance. 

We are seeking a Principal Consultant – Aviation Noise to join our team in a remote or hybrid position in the U.S. In this senior role, you will serve as a recognized technical expert in aviation noise, leading large and complex projects, supervising and mentoring staff, shaping practice strategy, and expanding HMMH’s presence in the aviation noise field. Occasional travel for client meetings, conferences, or on-site project activities is expected. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Serve as a recognized industry expert in aviation noise, including Part 150 noise compatibility planning, sound insulation programs, and noise elements of environmental reviews. 
  • Lead technically and procedurally complex projects from initiation through completion, ensuring scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives are met. 
  • Delegate responsibilities effectively to leverage expertise and maximize project and organizational impact.  
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to project managers, senior staff, and technical teams, fostering professional growth and project excellence. 
  • Supervise subconsultants and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality project outcomes. 
  • Prepare and review advanced technical reports, letters, and presentations that communicate complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences. 
  • Lead business development efforts, maintain long-term client relationships, identify new market opportunities, and support proposals for large and complex projects. 
  • Serve as a coach in business development and project management to Assistant PMs and PMs. 
  • Represent HMMH in the professional community through presentations, publications, technical committees, and recognized industry forums. 
  • Contribute to internal training, corporate initiatives, and strategic planning to advance the aviation noise practice. 
  • Other duties as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications 

  •  Bachelor’s degree or higher in Acoustics, Environmental Science, Engineering, Physics, Aviation, or a related discipline. 
  • 12+ years of progressive technical and project management experience in aviation noise analysis, airport noise compatibility planning, or environmental noise consulting. 
  • Proven experience leading large and complex projects, including Part 150 studies, sound insulation programs, and NEPA noise analyses. 
  • Recognized expertise in FAA noise policies, regulations, and modeling procedures. 
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach project managers and technical staff. 
  • Proven success in business development, client relationship management, and expanding market presence. 
  • Advanced proficiency with aviation noise modeling tools (e.g., AEDT, INM) and analytical methods. 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including technical report writing, advanced presentations, and public speaking. 
  • Active engagement in industry associations, technical committees, or peer-reviewed publications preferred. 
  • Ability to travel periodically for client meetings, conferences, or on-site project activities.
