About the Role

We're hiring a Fractional People Operations & HR Generalist to help us professionalize, de-risk, and evolve our people operations as we continue to rapidly scale. This role will partner closely with the Founder/CEO, Chief of Staff, accounting partners, and payroll provider to ensure our employment practices are compliant, documented, and scalable — while also leaving room to support culture, talent strategy, and people leadership as needed. This is a hands-on role for someone who can execute day-to-day HR administration and think strategically about how people systems support business growth.

Our immediate objectives are to de-risk multi-state W-2 employment and payroll compliance, reduce founder drag on HR and people operations, create clean and documented people processes that scale, and support a strong, intentional employee experience and culture.

Key Responsibilities

1. Payroll, Tax & Accountant Coordination

  • Serve as the primary HR point of contact for our accountants and payroll provider (Gusto)
  • Support payroll processing and administration in Gusto
  • Coordinate payroll tax compliance and assist with C Corp estimated tax payment workflows in partnership with accounting
  • Ensure payroll settings are correct by state (tax setup, pay frequency, exemptions, classifications)
  • Support administration of commissions and bonus structures as applicable

2. Multi-State Employment Compliance

  • Ensure required state employer registrations are in place (payroll tax, unemployment/SUI, etc.)
  • Oversee workers’ compensation coverage and role classifications by state
  • Maintain compliance with paid sick leave and paid family leave laws, PTO and time-off policies and employee classification
  • Manage required employee notices, wage disclosures, and final pay compliance
  • Ensure labor law posting requirements are met (digital and physical where applicable)

3. HR Documentation & Policy Management

  • Create, review, and maintain employee handbook, employment agreements and company policies
  • Manage handbook acknowledgements and employee documentation
  • Maintain clean, compliant employee records and retention practices

4. Onboarding & Offboarding

  • Own compliant onboarding processes
  • Manage offboarding processes

5. Employee Relations, Culture & Talent Support

  • Advise leadership team on performance management best practices
  • Support performance review processes and feedback cycles
  • Partner with leadership on culture, employee experience, and talent strategy as the business evolves
  • Assist with employee engagement initiatives and internal communications as needed

6. HR Operations & Vendor Oversight

  • Ensure payroll, benefits, and insurance vendors are properly configured and administered
  • Coordinate workers’ compensation, EPLI, and related insurance administration
  • Maintain employee census data and basic HR reporting
  • Partner with technology systems team to build employee database
  • Serve as a trusted operational partner to the Founder/CEO on people-related matters
