This full-time position offers a dynamic and impactful opportunity for financial leaders who are eager to drive financial strategy and operational improvements within the construction sector. Functioning as a key part of our remote workforce, the successful candidate will thrive in a varied, high-velocity environment, delivering financial insight and strategic guidance directly to construction firms varying in size from $10M to $75M in revenue.

As a core member of our team, the Fractional Construction Controller will not only manage financial strategies and systems but also act as a pivotal figure in steering our client companies towards profitable growth. This role is tailor-made for those who exhibit a strong executive presence, possess a deep understanding of construction finance management, and demonstrate a proven ability to think critically and act decisively.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic financial plans tailored to construction, including project-based revenue strategies, cost estimation, and cash flow management across active projects.
  • Evaluate and analyze construction-related acquisition and business sale opportunities.
  • Provide oversight of financial models, job cost accounting, project profitability reports, and construction scorecards/KPIs.
  • Present financial results — including actual vs. budget variance analysis, forecasts, and strategic recommendations — to owners and leadership teams with clarity and confidence.
  • Oversee budgeting processes at both the project and company level, reinforcing financial accountability across operations.
  • Manage relationships with client CPAs, banks, bonding agents, and insurance providers.
  • Develop strategies for securing construction loans, credit facilities, and bonding.
  • Provide financial leadership to accounting and project management teams, ensuring effective job costing and project financial discipline.
  • Support hiring plans for finance roles critical to construction operations.
  • Lead ERP selection and implementation specific to construction project tracking.
  • Oversee integration of construction management software with financial systems.
  • Act like owners, not consultants; Surface issues early and drive solutions — regardless of fault; Exceed client expectations, consistently; Communicate with clarity and confidence at every level of the organization; Follow through, close loops, and keep financial progress moving.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a VP of Finance or CFO in the construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, including job costing and percentage-of-completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with project managers and executives.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • CPA, CMA, or CFMA designation (preferred).
  • 5+ years of CFO or VP of Finance experience in construction (preferred).
  • Familiarity with construction software such as Foundation, Jonas Premier, Procore, Sage 300 CRE, or Sage Intacct (preferred).
  • M&A experience within the construction sector (preferred).
  • Prior fractional, outsourced, or advisory experience (preferred).
