Network Engineer I

The Network Engineer I plays a key role in supporting TierPoint’s Cloud, Colocation, and Managed Services Network Operations. This position requires a solid understanding of routing, switching, firewalls, and load-balancing technologies within a service provider environment. The ideal candidate will be able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.  

• Maintain managed network environments and provide daily operational support for managed customer including switching, routing, firewalls and load balancers. 
• Collaborate with customers to troubleshoot network performance issues, recommend design improvements, and assist with environment setup. 

• Support network device upgrades and configuration changes in coordination with internal teams. 

• Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing. 

• Contribute to product enhancement discussions and suggest new service offerings. 

• Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to provide 24x7x365 support for critical infrastructure.  

• Create and review Change Requests in accordance with TierPoint’s change management procedures.  

• Provide operational support for TierPoint’s core network infrastructure and recommend performance optimizations.  

• Maintain accurate documentation including network diagrams, implementation plans, and customer-facing materials. 

• Provides quality internal and external customer service surrounding the Company values. 

• Other duties as assigned. 

• 2+ years of experience in network design and production support. 

• 2+ years of experience with network security technologies and best practices. 

• Hands-on experience with at least one major firewall platform: 

• Cisco ASA, Juniper SSG/ISG, Check Point NGX, Fortinet FortiGate, Palo Alto, VMware NSX-T, AWS 

• Understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP). 

• Experience creating technical documentation and network diagrams (e.g., Visio). 

• Willingness to pursue relevant certifications (e.g., CCNP, CISSP). 

• Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills. 

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. 

Required Skills & Experience  

• 2–3 years of hands-on experience in network and security operations.  

• Familiarity with ticketing systems for incident, problem, and change management. 

• Working knowledge of core networking technologies: 

• Basic network security (firewalls, VPNs) 

• BGP and OSPF routing protocols 

• Cisco and Juniper routing/switching platforms 

• Cisco Nexus and access layer switches (e.g., 2960/3750 series) 

• Layer 2 protocols (STP, RSTP, etc.) 

• Strong customer service orientation and alignment with company values. 

• Ability to work in high-pressure, confidential environments and meet deadlines. 

• Proficient in using PCs, standard office equipment, and Microsoft Office Suite. 

Preferred Experience  

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field. 

• Certifications such as Network+, CCNA, Fortinet FCA/FCP/FCSS. 

• Experience with network virtualization (virtual firewalls, load balancers, MPLS VRFs). 

• Familiarity with cloud networking (Azure, AWS). 

• Experience supporting multi-tenant network environments. 

• 2+ years of experience with load balancer technologies: 

• F5 LTM/GTM, V-Shield, Brocade, Riverbed, A10 

• Proficiency with network monitoring tools (SNMP, NetFlow, syslog). 

• Advanced DNS knowledge. 

• Experience with Windows and Linux operating systems. 

• Network troubleshooting using tools like Wireshark or Omnipeek.

It’s important to note the pay range may be narrower than displayed, as various factors are used to determine the offered compensation package including skill set, level of experience, geographic locations, and other relevant factors -  i.e. budgetary requirements. The salary range listed below is not inclusive of total on target potential earnings and/or eligibility of the position. 

Pay Range $81,481.91 - $97,778.29
