We are looking for a Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter to join our team and take a lead role in underwriting and managing a diverse book of business across multiple lines, including general liability, commercial auto, umbrella/excess, property, crime, and motor truck cargo. In this position, you will assess and price endorsements, renewals, and new business within established underwriting guidelines and authority, while ensuring accurate risk evaluation and premium determination. You will be responsible for preparing thorough underwriting and rating workups, ordering, and reviewing inspection reports, and documenting your underwriting decisions with precision. This role also involves actively managing broker relationships, driving profitability, achieving retention and growth targets, and mentoring junior underwriting staff. Ideal candidates will bring deep technical expertise in commercial auto, strong knowledge of ISO rules and P&C underwriting principles, and the ability to deliver results in a fast-paced, multi-state commercial insurance environment.

 Your Impact:

  • Assess and price endorsements, renewals, and new business according to guidelines and authority as outlined in the underwriting manual and as assigned by their manager. Lines of business to underwrite include general liability, auto liability (incl. HNO), physical damage, umbrella/excess, property, crime, motor truck cargo, contingent auto, and cargo
  • Prepare the underwriting and rating work-up on renewal and new business policies.  Such work-up to include but is not limited to:
  • Select and/or verify class code and premium base and rating exposure
  • Determine appropriate credits and/or debits to obtain a fair and sustained premium for risk
  • Provide customer service by responding promptly and courteously to all requests for information
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and issuance of policies, as identified, and delegated by the manager.  This will sometimes require delegation of tasks to an underwriting assistant
  • Effectively communicate company standards, mission, underwriting guidelines, and requirements to brokers
  • Provide accurate documentation in the file and/or in electronic notes of underwriting thought process
  • Order/review inspection reports to assess risk quality and to confirm exposure base accuracy, as assigned by manager
  • Actively manage assigned book of business.  Responsible for achieving company renewal retention ratio goal and amount of new business written monthly in addition to company profitability goals
  • Actively manage relationships with assigned brokers and agents
  • Ensure that information available from internal and external resources is properly integrated into underwriting decision making

Successful Candidates Will Have:

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience as a Commercial Transportation Underwriter in a multi-state and multi-line commercial insurance environment required
  • Strong technical P&C underwriting knowledge and skills, specifically focused on Commercial Auto
  • Advanced knowledge of ISO commercial class codes and CLM rules, forms, rating, and regulatory requirements
  • Very strong knowledge of underwriting and pricing principles and the ability to use this knowledge to make underwriting and pricing decisions based on program criteria and strategy
  • Results-oriented, self-motivated problem solver with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks in response to both written and verbal requests
  • PC literate. Basic to intermediate skills with Word and Outlook. Intermediate skills in Excel
  • Should expect to assist with training and development of less experienced staff.  This includes the ability to do formal and informal training

At One80 Intermediaries, base pay is one part of our total compensation package, which also includes a comprehensive suite of benefits, including, for eligible employees, medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings. Also, for eligible employees, the Company offers 10 to 20 vacation days depending on experience and generally offers 11 paid holidays and 5 half days, depending on the calendar year. The total compensation for a position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. The expected base pay range for this position is between $64,800 – $120,000 annual salary plus bonus. The actual base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including geographical location, education, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
